Most of the Chinese people speak Mandarin. (indlucing Singaporean too) Sometimes when people travel between provinces Mandarin is not as understood because of the dialects.

Re: the Hong Kong Survival Guide!

dialect of the locals is mostly cantonese.

Re: Snorkeling in Puerto Vallarta - Mismaloya

Hi Terri

It's a local service. Just a guy and his boat.
The captain's name is Daniel and his boat is La Mantaraya. It's one of the newer boats on the beach. If you head to Mismaloya beach you'll see all the guys with their boats. You can ask anyone for Daniel and they can point you to the right direction.

(this is what Daniel look like: http://img.skitch.com/20090721...

We enjoy Daniel's service because he knows a lot of English and fun local stories. He is also quite nice.

Re: Snorkeling in Puerto Vallarta - Mismaloya

Hi! What you've described is exactly what we're looking for. NO crowds/parties--esp. with our 9 yr old son. ;)

Could you please tell me the name of the charter you took? We're heading there in October.

Thanks!

Terri

Re: Snorkeling in Puerto Vallarta - Mismaloya

To the fishies,

here comes a special recommendation for those who like snorkeling. besides the mentioned locations in the article please watch out for tours to the Marietta Islands, close to Punta Mita, at the northern tip of the Banderas Bay. There are many tours or private charters availabel. There You can experience true wildlife far away from the overcrowded places.

Best regards

I didn't experience too much shoving. We stayed in Tsuen Wan and it wasn't too bad out there. Also we knew to avoid the MTR during rush hours and only took it when people were at work. Overall Hong Kong was fun. We went around to various places and took a day trip to Macau. The only bummer was that it was expensive. Luckily I had a friend in Hong Kong who showed us around. Looking forward to next year...oh and the humidity suxed, but not too bad compared to Bangkok.

Re: Snorkeling in Puerto Vallarta - Mismaloya

I have been there two times, the experience has truly been great, in fact I loved the local people over there, I have a few friends there as well!

Re: the Hong Kong Survival Guide!

I like it makes me nostaligic good guide would like to be back there. Re the "shoving" in the MTR: a lot of it is people tripping and falling into other people -- this especially when they don't hold on to handrails (sometimes it's too crowded to find space to get to a handrail!) on moving trains.

On a more positive note: am glad that you did make it out to places like Tai O to see a different part of Hong Kong -- and, also, that you liked what you saw while there. :)

Re: Camping at Toya Lake, Hokkaido.

Nice pictures, that place is nice.
The evening was organized for us free of charge. The event was the march banquet for the Soroptimist society, and they invited us along!

We have heard of previous gaijins attending the event, but it's definitely not a frequent occurrence. We feel pretty honoured!!

The bulging tummy is probably a symbol of manliness, or male prowess, Ron. At least from what we've been told. Nice to see you checking in on our blog! =)
